Weekly Winners - May 24-30

Here are my favorite shots of the week. The majority of them were taken this week when we were letterboxing. We traveled to the town where Aaron and I went to college, met, and fell in love. So many great memories!! We tried to eat lunch at the diner where we had our first date, but it was closed down. :(

These were taken earlier in the week:

This is the same picture I posted for SOOC Saturday. This one, though, isn't straight out of the camera...I've had a lot of fun this week messing around in picnik.
Go see some more weekly winners...and join in yourself!

Photohunt - books

This week's them for Photohunt is books. I love seeing my kids reading. In this technological age, I don't want to see kids forgetting the pleasure of curling up with a good book.

My daughters enjoying a book from their book basket (right behind them). We also keep the boys' current reads in the coffee cup and my blurb books are stacked on the lots of books in that shot!

My son checking a book out!

SOOC Saturday

I took a photo of this beautiful peony on Thursday while we were letterboxing. It had been raining, and I loved the raindrops on the petals!

Loving My Husband Friday

Loving My Husband Friday is for taking the time to focus on the positives of marriage. A time to build up your marriage and your spouse. Focus on something you love about your husband, something he did to encourage you this week, or just a tip on how to keep your marriage strong. Let your husband know you're bragging on him...everyone loves praise and accolades. Try to spend the rest of your week focusing on all the great traits of your spouse...especially when your tempted to focus on the bad! And don't forget to pray for your husband and marriage as you write your post.

Add a link to your post to Mr. Linky. Then pray for the marriages of the others who post, and give each other a little encouragement to keep our marriages strong!

I am so thankful that my husband enjoys spending time with us. He rarely wants to go do his own thing...but would prefer doing things with me and the kids.

You Capture - Family

This week's You Capture theme at I Should Be Folding Laundry is family. What an easy theme - pretty much all of my pictures are of family!

Here's my SIL, Dad, BIL and 2 nephews (and my brother and sister's feet!!) at my nephews 3rd birthday party on Saturday. This is my side of the family and we spend lots of time together. Unfortunately, my husband's side of the family is spread out just enough that we don't get to see each other very often. Family, near or far, is so important!!

Josiah telling Sarah a story. I love seeing my 2 big boys with their baby sister. All of the big kids love her so much! Family is that special sibling relationship.

My kids. At this stage of my life so much of what I do revolves around them. (And, yes, Rachel is wearing her Super Girl oufit again).!!

Things I Love Thursday

I love a nice rain storm. I HATE thunderstorms...but a nice gentle rain can't be beat. I love the smell...I love the sound...I love the feel of the raindrops on my skin. I also like curling up on rainy days to watch one of my "rainy day movies". I love that it waters my garden, so I don't have to! I love that it brings life. If every day was rainy it would quickly get old, but an occasional rain is wonderful!!
Visit Sarah at 8 muddy Boots check out more lovable things!

Simple Family Fun - Playing in the Rain

When the rain drops start falling...go out and have a good time. Splash in puddles...catch raindrops on your tongue...get soaking wet! The kids will have a great time (and you just might, too)!
If you hear the rumble of thunder or see the flash of lightning...please get back inside! It's supposed to be fun, not dangerous!

Future Gymnast or Acrobat or Contortionist?

Whenever Sarah is on the floor she contorts her body into the strangest positions. This afternoon she looked like her head was unattached from her body! Looks really freaky!(no babies were harmed in the making of this post)

Wordless Wednesday - The Little Boy in All of Us

Works for Me Wednesday - DVD Storage

I live in a small house and DVD's are enormous space takers. I want them accessible when I need them, but out of the way when I don't. So, I came up with this solution. We use this CD storage system. It stores 80 DVD's, each with it's own number.

A slide out tray underneath has a place to label each number with the corresponding movie.
When you want to watch a movie, you look it up on the list, slide the selector to that number...and you have your movie.

Works for me!! Visit We Are That Family for more Works for Me Wednesday.

In His Word Wednesday

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. ~ Philippians 2:3-4

Just think how different the world would be if we all followed this admonition from Scripture! Can you imagine the difference it would make in our families lives. Even the most humble among us are so self centered!! I know I like to think I'm thinking of others...but if I look deep into my heart most of the time I am only concerned about myself. I am going to be mindful this week to try to put others before myself...want to join me?

Crock Pot Macaroni and Cheese

I don't remember where I first found this recipe...but it is yummy and simple. The original recipe didn't have the smoked sausage...but I decided to add it after a friend brought macaroni and cheese with smoked sausage when Sarah was born. We all liked the addition!

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cup milk
  • salt and pepper
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 lb. grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 lb. macaroni
  • 1 (12 oz.) can evaporated milk
  • 1 pkg. smoked sausage

  1. Cook macaroni, drain, put in crock pot.
  2. Add cheese, reserving one cup, and add butter
  3. Mix well.
  4. Beat eggs. Add milk, salt and pepper.
  5. Add to macaroni and mix well.
  6. Add in cut up sausage. Mix well.
  7. Spread remaining 1 cup cheese on top.
  8. Cook on low 3 hours.

I ♥ Faces - Silhouettes

This weeks theme at I heart faces is Silhouettes. This one was really hard for me. Because we live in town, by the time the sun is over neighboring houses and buildings it's too light out to get a silhouette. I got up at sunrise one morning to try...but it just didn't work (this was a huge sacrifice for this mommy of a baby who still gets up at least twice a night!!). So, I finally decided to try one inside...I got the idea of getting my son reading. He reads every evening in our here he is.

Strawberry Shortcake

With summer comes strawberries! And one of my favorite ways to enjoy strawberries is with strawberry shortcake. When I have strawberry shortcake I don't like the biscuit-type cakes...I like a nice spongy cake to soak up the juices. I searched for a sponge cake recipe earlier this month...and found this one on It is so yummy...I eat it just by itself!! And even better it is super simple and made with ingredients that you always have on hand.

3 eggs
1 cup sugar
4 Tbsp. water
1 cup flour
1 level teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon flavoring extract (I use vanilla)

First, break the eggs into a medium sized bowl.

Beat them for 1 minute at half speed.

Add sugar. Beat for 5 minutes until it thickens and is lemon colored.

Add water. Beat for another minute.
Sift together the flour and baking powder. (I just whisk it really well).

Stir the flour mixture into the wet ingredients. Do not overmix or the cake will be tough.
Add the flavoring and pour into a shallow baking pan. I used an 8 inch cake pan. I sprayed it with cooking spray. Bake at 400 for 5 minutes...then decrease the temperature to 375 and cook for 20 minutes more.

Yummy Strawberry Shortcake. And if you don't have any strawberries...yummy cake!!

Building Our Marriage Challenge

God has laid my marriage, and marriage in general, on my heart. Our marriages are relationships worth nurturing. It is so easy to get wrapped up in our own lives (kids, home, ministry, jobs) and neglect that one special relationship. Every week I'm going to post a simple challenge designed to breathe life into my marriage. They will be little things that show my husband that I'm thinking about him and he means the world to me. I invite you to join me. I plan on making one challenge a week on Tuesdays, and giving myself the rest of the week to complete the challenge.

If you do join me, please adjust the challenges to your husband. If the challenge is something you know he wouldn't like, tweak it to fit him. If my challenges don't fit at all...make your own!! Let me know of any creative ideas you have for the challenges. And, join me on Friday's in praising your husband and focusing on all of his wonderful traits with Loving My Husband Fridays.

This weeks challenge is to write a love note to your husband. Make it simple...or make it's up to you.

Yesterday as I was nursing the baby I glanced around the room...I saw my two daughters playing polly pockets on the floor together and my two boys playing together...I felt so blessed and my heart was full. I am so thankful that God has so richly blessed me with these children. They each have such unique personalities and yet they all have such loving and caring hearts. They are such GREAT kids. They bring joy to each and every day. My home is full of laughter and playful voices. My life is full of bustling activity and joyous games. My table is full of hungry and thankful mouths who love my humble attempts at cooking. My arms are full of snuggles and hugs. My cheeks are full of kisses. My heart is full of love. I am so thankful to be their mother!

Frame Makeover

The picture frames in the living room have been bothering me for awhile. The wood was a little different on each one and they just felt outdated.

So, I decided to paint them black! When I browse decorating sites and magazines I always love the black frames, so I decided to go for it.

Here is the finished project:
I love how the black frames make the pictures stand out. But, now I need to change the shelf!! My husband and I have differing opinions on what color to paint it. One thinks white...the other black. (I'm not going to say which is which...don't want to influence your vote!). The trim in the room is white and we plan on painting the room a shade of gray (or something much lighter than this red) this summer. So what do you think...white or black?

The kids found a frog on Tuesday. That poor little guy got carried around for over an hour. I hope he's still alive!! I love this picture of Rachel and Caleb looking at it so intently. Rachel looks like she's thinking of kissing it to get her prince!!
