Whenever you fill out a form it's inevitable...it asks for your occupation. I have always been reluctant to check the homemaker box. I didn't want to be a homemaker...it was so old fashioned and archaic. I was a Stay at Home Mom...a full-time Mother. My life revolved around my children and not my home.
I viewed a homemaker as someone who cleaned and cooked all day long. Someone whose home was more important than the people who filled it. Someone who worked, worked, worked and never played. I wanted no part of that life.
Recently, though, I've realized that homemaker isn't equal to housekeeper. A housekeeper keeps a clean house, but a homemaker has the job of making a house a home. Making a retreat...a place to escape the world outside. A place filled with memories. A place filled with love. The kind of place that we all want to spend our time.
So I am trying to embrace my role as homemaker. Unfortunately, that includes some of the mundane tasks of keeping a home running - but it is so much more. I want our home to be clean and filled with the smells of good food cooking. But, I also want my home to be a place my husband can't wait to come home to . . . a place filled with my children's laughter . . . a place we can all find peace in this chaotic world.
I think this involves atmosphere more than anything. The small touches that makes a house a home. Making each day a special day. So - I am so thankful that I am blessed to be able to have the job title of homemaker - and pray that I daily make this house a home.
