Resurrection Eggs

This is a repost from last year.  Resurrection Sunday (or Easter) is only a week away and these resurrection eggs are a great way to incorporate the fun of Easter with the significance of Resurrection Sunday.   They are a great way to share the story of Christ's Resurrection with your children (or any children!).  Enjoy!!

I first heard of Resurrection Eggs when I was in college on a ministry team. I thought they were really cool, but didn't give it a thought again until I had kids of my own. Then I started seeing them in Christian Book catalogs, but I wasn't willing to spend the money on them. Then, a few years ago, I saw directions online for making your own. I'm sure if you google it, you'll find many different versions. Here is what I did (I improvised on some of them because I didn't have the suggested item!). I printed the message and the verse on a small slip of paper, then put it in a plastic egg with the item. I then wrote the number on the egg with a permanent marker.

Egg#1 -
Message - Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. The people waved palm branches.
Verse - Matthew 21:1-11
Item - Piece of a palm branch or a small plastic leaf (I used a leaf thing from the playmobil set)

Egg #2
Message - Mary poured expensive perfume on Jesus' feet
Verse - Johm 12:2-8
Item - Small perfume sample or piece of cotton with cologne on it (I cut up an old wash cloth, and sprayed it with perfume)

Egg #3
Message - Jesus shared the last supper with his disciples.
Verses - Matthew 26:17-19
Item - A small piece of chex cereal or make a small bread-like shape out of clay. (I used a cheerio...this same cheerio has been in the egg for several years now...ewww).

Egg #4
Message - Judas betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver
Verse - Matthew 27:3
Item - 3 dimes

Egg #5
Message - Jesus carried his own cross
Verse- John 19:17
Item - toothpicks glued in a cross form; a small plastic or metal cross from jewelery. (I took two toothpicks and wrapped yarn aroun them to hold them together. I then trimmed the ends)

Egg #6
Message - Soldiers placed a crown of thorns on Jesus' head.
Verse - John 19:2
Item - Small thorny branch, or a large thorn all by itself. (I used a thorn from a rose).

Egg #7
Message - Soldiers parted Jesus' garments and cast lots for his coat.
Verse - John 19:23
Item - Swatch of burlap and a nail or dice.

Egg # 8
Message - Jesus was nailed to the cross and pierced in His side.
Verses - John 19:18,37 & John 20:25-29
Item - A nail.

Egg #9
Message - They gave Jesus vinegar mixed with gall on a sponge to drink,
Verse - Matthew 27:34
Item - small sponge (I used one of the sponges I found at the ocean)

Egg #10
Message - Spices to prepare Jesus for burial.
Passage - John 19:40
Item - 7 or 8 whole cloves, or other whole spices

Egg #11
Message - The stone covering Jesus' tomb was rolled away.
Verse - John 20:1
Item - A small rock

Egg #12
Message - The napkin around Jesus' head was lying separately from his linen clothes. He was not there. He is risen!
Verses - John 20:6-7
Item - scrap of linen-type fabric.

We hide the eggs outside, then the kids find them. Then we go through each egg...reading the message and looking up the verses. We are going to do this this afternoon...hopefully I'll get some pictures.

If you would like to make your own eggs, here are some printables:
