Christmas in July

Yesterday was our annual Christmas in July celebration.  It was a day filled with family, fun, food and heat!!

Homeschooling Week in Review - Week 2

Two weeks down!

We celebrated Caleb's birthday on Sunday afternoon.  He also went laser tagging twice, once on Sunday with cousins and again on Thursday with friends.

Math is review for all four kids.  They're spending time getting extra practice on things we are still struggling with and skipping through problems that they fully understand.

Caleb studied survival skills in Science.  He practiced building a shelter of his own.

We all studied mollusks and worms in science and made notebook pages for them.  The boys tried to dig earthworms to observe, but they said the dirt was just too dry and they couldn't find any.

In geography, we made paper mache earths.  The round balloons I bought were a little smaller than I thought they would be and weren't nearly as round as I had hoped.  But, I think the kids enjoyed the project (although they didn't enjoy the second and third layer of paper mache nearly as much as the first).  We got one layer of paint on them, but I think they'll need a few more.   Hopefully, next week I'll have pictures of the finished projects.

In history, we finished the unit on South America.   Caleb finished reading By the Great Horn Spoon!.  Josiah read parts of Gold Rush Fever and started Stuart Little.   Rachel read Nate the Great, The Long Way to a New Land , and When Jessie Came Across the Sea.  Jada read a lesson and a half in Sonlight's I Can Read It.   We read five chapters of Moccasin Trail for our read-aloud.

The girls built a floor puzzle of the solar system one day.  In the first picture their standing on the sun and they're shouting because they're burning.  The second picture they are standing on earth ... their home.

Homeschooling Week in Review - Week 1

Our first week of school is over!!  For the most part it was a good week, although we did have a few hiccups.  Josiah was sick most of the week, so we kept things light for him.

Since its still summer, we are balancing school with summer activities.   Monday morning, Aaron, Caleb and Rachel went to watch friends show their goats at the 4-H fair.  They were back home by 9:30, so we were able to start our first day of school without too much delay.  Aaron took Jada and Sarah with him Tuesday for a quick visit with his family.   It was so much easier to get work done without Sarah around!!   Wednesday afternoon, Aaron and the boys went to see the new Harry Potter movie at the IMAX in 3D.  Then, we all went to see it at the drive-in Thursday night.

Most of all we, along with most of our country, have been trying to avoid the heat!!  Our air conditioners made it through the week ... but we were worried several times as they struggled to keep up!   When it's hot like this, you might as well do school, right?

Staying out of trouble

This week we've been doing a unit on South America.   We've done a lot of map work and the boys have really enjoyed it.  We learned about Simon Bolivar and his quest to liberate South America.  In science, we're learning the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates.  We also learned about echinoderms.  In geography, we learned some fun facts about this place we all call home.  We also discussed homeless people and spent some time looking through Material World: A Global Family Portrait.  I think it really impacted the kids to see just how much we have.

School Room Pictures ...

Here's a few pictures of our school room as we start the new year.   I left a few areas blank to add the projects we complete throughout the year.  We added a new round table on Saturday (thanks, Gen!!) and a new whiteboard on Sunday (thanks again, Gen!!) which led to some scrambled rearranging on Sunday afternoon.  We got everything in order just in time for school to start!

Alex - 6 months old

6 months.   Half of a year.

Where has the time gone??

He's a happy guy.

He loves to play with toys.

DSC_0060

Everything goes in his mouth ... but no teeth, yet.

He no longer stays in one place ... he's a man on the move.

DSC_0066

He's started solid foods.

He still nurses more like a newborn than a 6 month old.

I think often its more for comfort than for nourishment.

DSC_0068

He's a tummy sleeper.

He still wakes several times in the night.

He takes on good nap a day, and cat naps several other times.

He gets slap happy.

He loves to laugh.

He babbles all the time (and some kids think he says their name, LOL).

Alex 6 months

He bounces in his exersaucer and loves to turn the knobs.

He moves his walker at breakneck speeds.

He loves to be surrounded by family and hates to be alone.

Alex 6 months

He's growing too fast.

He fills our days with joy.

Six months

Rachel and the typewriter ...

A few more of my favorites from my little photo shoot with Rachel and the typewriter.

DSC_0095

Sarah, of course, thought she needed to be right in the thick of things.   She was wearing the clothes she wore when we painted the porch ... not exactly photo worthy, LOL.
